Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS) Speech-Language Sciences and Technology (SST)
The undergraduate curriculum in Speech-language Sciences and Technology is administered by the
Department of Health Sciences. We offer undergraduate course work that can stand alone as a terminal
baccalaureate experience, or prepares students for graduate study in Communication Sciences and Disorders.
Graduates receive a B.A. or B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies (BIS) with a 27 semester hour emphasis in
SST. We are happy you are interested in pursuing our BIS emphasis. It is our sincere belief that you will
find the curriculum to be educational, challenging, and rewarding.
SST is also offering a full leveling curriculum for students who want to apply for
graduate studies in communication sciences and disorders, but who have baccalaureate degrees in other fields.
What's more, we have a On-Line Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Training program to give students
an educational background for service under the supervision of a professional Speech-Language Pathologist.*
The BIS program offers students with an interest in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology the
advantage of a broad educational experience with the ability to learn about human communication and
disorders. The courses required for the emphasis in Speech-language Sciences And Technology serve
two purposes. First, the emphasis courses provide you with the pre-professional course requirements
necessary to enter many graduate programs, including Northern Arizona Univerisity's graduate program,
in Clinical Speech Pathology.
Second, they provide you with general education in which contributes to the broad appeal of the BIS
program. All BIS students take 15 hours in a focus area outside the students' emphasis which are
selected by the student and approved by the advisor. The SST program has established four Department
approved focus areas: science and research, hearing science, special education, or language and
culture.
*Since regulations vary form state to state and fluctuate from time to time. SLP-A students must familiarize
themselves with local observation and practicum requirements and arrange to fulfill these requirements through
their employers (or prospective employers).
